R.I.P. RFTC

As reported in Pitchfork yesterday (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/news/05-09/06.shtml#rocketfromthecrypt), Rocket From The Crypt has planned to call it quits on Halloween. One of my favourite all time bands, it's a shame; but at leasty they are going out on a high note before their musical output became crap. I've loved all their releases and bless them for putting the multitudes of hard-to-find singles on compilations every few years (see: All Systems Go, Vol. 1 & Vol.2). RFTC's crunchy guitar riffs, pounding rhythm section and horn blasts are always welcome to my ears. And so many of their songs are damn catchy and have those great sing-along choruses. I was fortunate enough to catch them live on the first or second incarnation of the Warped Tour a while back and they were unbelievable! The graced the second stage, so I was able to get up close and soak up all the Speedo-ness that John Reis could muster. They were clad in matching silver shirts and blew the doors off the place. I snapped many photos and that will always rank as one of my top 4 shows.

If I had to rate some of RFTC albums in my order of preference:

1. All Systems Go, Vol.2
So many catchy songs that did not appear on any proper albums, making them like little sonic treasures.
2. Scream, Dracula, Scream
Strong from start to end.
3a. The State of Art is on Fire
Not a full album per se, but "Light Me" and "Rid or Ride" alone make it worth it.
3b. Circa: Now
Gets a 3b. beacuse I hate ranking CDs. Many great tracks and a raw sound.
4. RFTC

October = ROCKtober !!!

My fall concert scene just got even better! Already slated to catch Ted Leo, Lou Barlow, Arcade Fire (with U2), Broken Social Scene announced an O-Dot date and I've nabbed tix already! I've heard a couple of tracks off the forthcoming album, and they are tres good, so this promises to be a goof show. I missed them earlier in the summer, but that was an outdoor festival and I heard that the sound was not great. So, in a small packed club, with small stage crammed full of Broken Social Scenesters, it will be a rockin show.
