Also getting some serious rotation on my airwaves is "Goodbye Enemy Airship, the Landlord is Dead" by the group Do Make Say Think. Despite the somewhat pretentious title, this album is excellent.
I also forgot to mention that 'Nefertiti' is an absolutely gorgeous Miles Davis album that must be on my top 7 list. I listened to it yesterday while stuck in Toronto gridlock, which helped me remain mellow while traffic inched forward at a crawl.
Getting a lot of spin on my computer and CD player these days: the latest Wilco album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. It is phenomenal. Picking up where the last disc, Summerteeth left off, adding a few layers and some sonic experimentation while retaining the pop/country influences. Some critics are calling Wilco’s "Radiohead" album, and I suppose that is a compliment (I don’t listen to very much Radiohead). Many great songs: from several super straight-ahead rockers like ‘War on War’ and ‘Pot Kettle Black’ to slower tunes such as the album closer ‘Reservations’, a song about finding love amid confusion, where Jeff Tweedy gently croons "I've got reservations / about so many things / but not about you," before it drifts into a piano and radio noise denouement. Possibly the album’s highlight. On the opener ‘I am Trying to Break Your Heart’, a shout out to a lover past (possibly a lament), it is difficult to tell whether Tweedy is sincere or sarcastic when he sings the title chorus. The songs throughout are sprinkled with echoed, mumbled vocals, piano tinkling, synth hum and occasional radio fuzz that adds an edge while not diminishing the pop sensibility. Go, go and download this album now.
